Dorothy Marie Kubena, 99, of Caldwell, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 31, 2023, in Caldwell, Texas, surrounded by her loving daughters.

AFuneral Mass was held at 9 a.m. on Friday,August 4, 2023, at St. Mary’s Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Caldwell, with Father Melvin Dornak and her godson, Msgr. Leonard Pivonka, officiating.

Interment followed in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

A visitation and Rosary was held, Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Dorothy Marie (Piwonka) Kubena was born on March 10, 1924, in Frenstat, Texas, to Ludwig and Frances (Hruska) Piwonka. She was the youngest of eight siblings, who all remained close throughout their lifetime.

She graduated from Caldwell High School in 1942 and attended Business School in Houston.

She married Albert Kubena of Dime Box on September 3, 1946.

They had two daughters, Deborah Morgan, and Rita Baca.

After Dorothy retired, she and her husband moved back to Burleson County in 1978.

She was involved in many activities in the Caldwell area and was proud of her Czech heritage.

In 1991 she and her husband were named King and Queen of the Caldwell Kolache Festival and became well-known for her Kolaches. Her Kolache recipe was featured in the Texas Highway Magazine.

She also served on the Kolache Festival Committee for many years, and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and a devout member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caldwell.

She loved cooking and baking, gardening, quilting, playing dominoes, dancing to Czech music, cold pivo and Aggie football.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and became “Granny” to many Aggies during their time at A&M.

She had a warm, welcoming heart, never met a stranger, and greeted everyone with a smile. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Deborah Morgan and husband, Pat, of Caldwell; and Rita Baca and husband, Dan, of Pleasanton; grandchildren, Clayton Baca (Kristine) of Driftwood, Bryan Baca (Abby) of Magnolia, Frank Baca (Lindsay) of Caldwell, DanaArtz (Alan) of Pleasanton, Ray Baca (Christina) of Pleasanton, and Cody Morgan of Missouri. She was blessed with twelve great-grandchildren who loved her dearly: Wyatt, Lily, Boone, Ada, Leighton, Tanner, Macy, Charlee, Tucker, Tyler, Reagan and Lauren. She is also survived by many special nieces, and nephews.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Clayton Baca, Bryan Baca, Frank Baca, DanaArtz, Ray Baca and great-nephew Patrick Ubernosky, along with honorary Pallbearer Cody Morgan (grandson).

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her caregivers at Burleson St. Joseph Manor and Enhabit Hospice Care for their attentive care. And a special thanks to her niece, Gloria Telg, who was her selfless companion during her final years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Caldwell Knights of Columbus , St. Rita’s Quilting Guild, or St. Mary’s Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
